Below you will find a general description for the Georgetown County area. Thank you, Frankie francesthills@sc.rr.com |
1. The Black River Area Reputedly the cleanest river in South Carolina with a depth of 35feet in this county. As a tidal river of 4 feet, the fresh water flows both ways influenced by the ocean tides. Several miles downstream it becomes brackish. From the western county line Georgetown is over an hour by boat and 30 -45 minutes by car. The BLACK RIVER area is less densely populated and made up of rural farmlands, large hunting tracts, and homes scattered on the fresh water rivers and creeks. Beautiful unspoiled scenic locations fishing, hunting, boating, water skiing, and quiet relaxation.
2. The next geographical section is the Town of Georgetown where the Historic District, Wedgefield Golf and Country, Belle Isle, smaller neighborhoods, and some unincorporated areas are found. The tourist industry is developing due to the history, museums, marinas, shops, and restaurants. Within the last few years many restorations have taken place, and this has become one of the most desirable places to live in the county. This area revolves around Winyah Bay where the Black, Pee Dee, Waccamaw, Sampit, and Santee Rivers converge.
3. The third is the WACCAMAW NECK, a peninsula made by the Waccamaw River on the west and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. This is by far the most densely populated and the center of the golf, short term rental vacations, and retirement community. It is made up of Pawleys Island, Litchfield Beach, and Murrells Inlet.
