Neighborhood Descriptions & Featured Real Estate Listings

Historic Georgetown SC neighborhood descriptions, historic properties, homes for sale and MLS real estate listings.
Georgetown South Carolina is the hidden gem nestled between Charleston and the Grand Strand, a city that boasts both a colorful past and a modern quality of life that has ranked it among America 's 100 best small towns. It is South Carolina 's third oldest city, and evidence of the city's pre-Revolutionary War beginnings can be seen everywhere in this community of about 9,000 people.

There are three main neighborhoods in Georgetown.

Historic District of Georgetown:  Elisha Screven laid out the original four-by-eight block plan for the city in 1729, two centuries after the Spanish first sailed into Winyah Bay and briefly settled in the area. The original town is what is now referred to as the Historic District, and presidents George Washington and James Monroe were among the early visitors.
The Kaminski House Museum , which dates from 1770 and belongs to the City is home to a large collection of English and American antiques. Located on Front Street , the town's coastal location at the confluence of three rivers - the Great Pee Dee , Waccamaw and Sampit - has played a big part in its history.  In the mid 1800s, Georgetown was a center for the cultivation of rice and indigo. Stop in at the Rice Museum on Front Street , open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, for a look at the importance of this crop in Georgetown history, chronicled with a diorama and other exhibits.

Today, Historic Georgetown is home to beautiful old homes and churches, some of which are open to visitors. Today you can walk to several marinas, the downtown business area, and 5 churches.  In the downtown business area there are great restaurants, high end shops, 2 museums, and a harbor walk with several types of boats--from yachts, sailboats, charter fishing craft, pleasure boats, to commercial shrimp and long line vessels.

Belle Isle:  Belle Isle, as most communities in this county, was once a thriving rice plantation. During the '50s and '60s many of the wetlands were diked, lakes were formed, and much of the high ground, with the moss covered oaks and huge pine trees, were divided into residential lots. Turning former rice plantations into neighborhoods was a relatively new concept at that time. Belle Isle was an immediate success as evidenced by the number of brick ranch homes seen today. It has continued to flourish and offers the same quality of life as new homes continue to be built. In this neighborhood many types of wildlife may seen in your own backyard: deer, raccoons, squirrels, ducks, herons, and yes, maybe an alligator. The remains Battery White, a Confederate fort, are here.  Membership is available for a full service marina and yacht club with slips and dry dockage located on Winyah Bay, part of the Intracoastal Waterway. Membership also includes pool, tennis courts, and a private front beach house at Pawleys Island for entertaining and ocean access.

Wedgefield:  Wedgefield was once a flourishing 18th century rice plantation located on the "wedge" of land jutting into the convergence of the Black and PeeDee Rivers, thus the name Wedgefield.  The golf course, under new ownership, has had extensive upgrades. With 5 sets  of tees and stretching to just over 7,000 yards, this track will test every aspect of your game. It is accented with numerous ancient oaks and breathtaking views of old ricefields. The beautiful clubhouse and grounds were once a true southern manor house of the plantation and now offers fine dining and catering. Wedgefield also has a private boat landing for launching boats into Black River and from there to the Intracoastal Waterway.  The Georgetown Hospital System plans to build a new facility less than 2 miles away, and the YMCA building is almost complete next to the hospital site.
